White Sands Missile Range

27 Oct 2014

Alamogordo, New Mexico

Can't do any flying around here,
cause this is seriously restricted military air space....

So just went to the Museum of Space History, in Alamogordo.
A good display, but only one brief mention that I saw, of Sputnick,
and surely that was a big event in space history.....

My scruffy low and slow rig feels out of place here....

Moved north to Carrizozo airfield to fly the big lava flow there.

This sign is on the highway nearby....

And this recent notice was posted in the pilot's lounge....
Basically it says that they're going to test Patriot intercept missiles,
and some debris may fall outside the restricted area.....
Really need to check NOTAMs around here!

This is the Carrizozo Lava Flow, 70 miles long,
but some of it is in the restricted zone.....

It's extremely harsh and hazardous terrain,
sharp texture like a giant cheese grater,
so wouldn't want to go down in it....

And supposedly it all came from that little bump in the distance....

Some plants thrive in this terrain.
I don't know how they can get established in this rock with so little rain....
